Advisory Board

The College of Sciences Advisory Board, appointed by the dean, is a voluntary group of community and business leaders, alumni, and friends who advise the dean on issues of importance to the college. Below are the bylaws and members of the board.

Bylaws

  1. NAME
    This organization shall be called the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) College of Sciences Advisory Board.
     
  2. PURPOSE
    The purpose of the Advisory Board is to provide counsel, connections, and funding to promote the objectives of the UNLV College of Sciences. The board is empowered to raise discretionary funds on behalf of the College of Sciences.
     
  3. MEMBERSHIP
    The Advisory Board shall consist of from 10-20 distinguished alumni, friends, and corporate leaders appointed by the dean. Members serve at the pleasure of the dean.

    Benefits to Members: Service on the Advisory Board will provide members the opportunity to:
     
    1. Participate in developing the College of Sciences into a first-tier academic program;
    2. Learn from the College of Sciences about new research and technology relevant to their fields; and
    3. Communicate with one another about important issues in respective fields.

     
  4. MEETINGS
    The full Advisory Board's regular meetings will take place at least once a year, typically in the fall semester of each academic year, on the campus of UNLV. The chair, in consultation with the dean, may call additional meetings as deemed necessary.
     
  5. CHAIR
    There shall be a chair of the advisory board elected annually from among the active members of the board at the fall meeting. Upon the recommendation of the dean and the executive committee of the board, the chair may be elected to serve a second consecutive term for a total of two years. Among the duties of the chair are:
     
    1. Preside at the meetings of the Advisory Board;
    2. Act as a representative of the Advisory Board; and
    3. Appoint committees of the Advisory Board.

     
  6. EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
    The ability of the membership to achieve various goals and objectives of the advisory board requires establishment of certain permanent and task committees.

    The Executive Committee shall be the only permanent committee of the board. Its structure and responsibilities are:
     
    1. The Executive Committee shall consist of the following: the chair of the Advisory Board; the immediate past chair of the board; and the dean of the College of Sciences. The associate deans, the director of development, and the College of Sciences executive assistant shall be ex-officio members.
    2. The Executive Committee shall act on behalf of the Advisory Board between meetings of the board. The Executive Committee shall also function as the nominating committee for new members of the Advisory Board. Recommendations for new members will be solicited annually from the membership of the Advisory Board. The Executive Committee shall be the operating arm of the Advisory Board.

    Temporary task committees may be appointed by the Executive Committee as deemed appropriate for the most effective functioning of the Advisory Board in carrying out the stated purpose of the board.

    These task committees shall be formed to deal with specific issues or tasks, which may confront the Advisory Board. Task committees shall be comprised of members of the Executive Committee, appropriate deans and staff of the College of Sciences, and members of the Advisory Board. Membership may be augmented by other people (including UNLV faculty and staff) well-qualified to deal with the specific issue or task. These people may be faculty, students, or other volunteers identified as having skills or expertise in the subject area. The task committees shall provide status reports and/or results to the Advisory Board at each of its meetings. Task committees shall be disbanded after completing their assigned duties.

     
  7. AMENDMENTS
    These bylaws can be amended with the approval of two-thirds of the active membership of the Advisory Board and the endorsement of the dean of the College of Sciences and the president of the university.
     
  8. ADOPTION
    These bylaws shall be adopted with the approval of two-thirds of the active membership of the Advisory Board and the endorsement of the dean of the College of Sciences and the president of the university.
