Mission
UNLV Biology Bioinformatics Group's primary goal is to accelerate biological research at UNLV and UNR by assisting faculty with the application of computing to biological problems. We will identify ways to apply bioinformatic methods to research problems, provide individual and group training, and assist in experimental design and data analysis. We can also provide basic scripting and programming support in multiple languages and operating systems, and act as a point of contact between biology and the high-performance computing environments provided by the NSCEE and OSC.
Our secondary goal is to develop the bioinformatics infrastructure of the Nevada System of Higher Education by fostering collaborations between researchers in computer science, mathematics and biology, and conducting original research in the development of machine learning methodologies for biological data mining, hypothesis generation and testing.
The group is funded by a 5 year Institutional Development Award (IDeA) from NCRR to establish the Nevada IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE).
