The College of Sciences is a special place where the thirst for knowledge and the search for new discoveries never end. As a dean, my responsibility is to ensure that our teaching, research, and curriculum remain innovative and competitive with the nation's best. We have recruited top-notch faculty and students, developed an intense yet well-rounded curriculum, and are building state-of-the art facilities. These are exciting times at the College of Sciences; I invite you to join us.
Faculty and Students Working Together
Learning is a collaborative process and our faculty share the university's commitment to a student-centered educational environment. Our research programs give students an opportunity to work closely with faculty in the classroom, the laboratory, and in the field.
For example, geoscience associate professor Brenda Buck and students Mike Howell and Amy Brock recently traveled to the Atacama Desert in Chile to sample soils to provide earthly comparisons when discussing the possibilities of life on Mars. This, and our other achievements in the classroom, laboratory, and field are a tribute to the hard work and dedication of our science faculty.
Curriculum
Whether examining the mysteries of genetic evolution or the intricacies of mathematical theorems, our rigorous curriculum exposes students to cutting-edge research methodology and technology. On campus, at nearby research facilities, and at field stations around the globe, our students and faculty are exploring the most distant galaxies and deepest crevices of the earth. We are leaving no challenge unmet.
Facilities
The college's assortment of state-of-the-art equipment and facilities provides an ever-growing set of opportunities for students who desire the best from their undergraduate and graduate experiences. The soon-to-be-completed Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) Building will further enhance our teaching and research programs and create a flexible, evolving environment for scientific inquiry and discovery.
A Collaboration
The spirit and enthusiasm in the college makes my position all the more rewarding. Each and every day our students and faculty test themselves and each other in the search for knowledge to make our community better; our graduates are obtaining professional positions in academia, government service, nonprofit ventures, and diverse private sector organizations; and our alumni remain active and enthusiastic supporters of our college. Each of these groups is contributing their energies and resources to improve UNLV and the world we live in. We all are indebted to them.
I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you here on campus.
Sincerely,
Wanda J. Taylor
