Take me home
Are your students becoming increasingly unruly? Are you constantly receiving “why do I care looks” during your carefully planned lessons? Are you finding it more difficult to keep them interested? Do you feel that you would rather curl up with a nice book than ponder the daunting task of writing science lesson plans? If you answered yes or no to any of the preceding questions, you are in desperate need of Desert Survivors: The Classroom Experience!
Candice We promise in no way to fix any of the afore mentioned issues. We do, however, promise to bring the desert to your classroom, put smiles on your students faces, and maybe even teach them a little something about biology!
Desert Survivors is an educational outreach program centered around a television show that aims to increase public awareness of the environment around Las Vegas while introducing local students to biological concepts they will use in the classroom and eventually on standardized tests. Jen
This program is an educational supplement and is not intended to teach concepts as much as to intrigue students and to inspire them to enjoy science and go on to learn more! Because the show is driven by what local fifth graders want to know about the desert and its inhabitants, we needed a venue to acquire questions, and what better way to interact with students than the classroom!

Desert Survivors the Classroom Experience includes a thought provoking presentation on a particular Desert Survivor presented by one of your Desert Survivors hosts, Jen or Candice. Followed by a review ball game, where students have a chance to go over what they learned and loosen up a bit.

Review Ball Game
Jennifer From UNLV TV During the ball game, small groups of students will be taken out of the classroom to film with UNLV TV. Each student will be given a chance to ask one or two questions regarding the topic of the day. The questions will be taped in a fun filled session with the host that didn't present and one of the UNLV TV camera crew members, Jennifer, Bill, Ken or Joey.
Each student will also receive a packet with information about the show and activities they can work on and take home to share with their parents. Each activity packet is custom tailored to the presentation topic of the day. These activities consist of crosswords, mazes, word searches, recipes, riddles, hidden phrases, and cryptogram formats. Examples of past activities can be viewed and downloaded in PDF form in the Activities page on this site! Activities

Our first year, we approached teachers via email contact and visited about 11 schools to compile questions for our first four shows. We now have 8 more shows to produce over the next few years and we need your help obtaining the driving questions for the shows! All you need to do is contact Desert Survivors and request a visit. We will coordinate a time to come visit your classroom. All you need to do is clear up about an hour of class time, make sure your students publicity releases are in order, and we’ll do the rest!

The Desert Survivors Team consists of the two hosts, Jen and Candice, and a small crew of 1 to 3 people from UNLV TV. We come equipped with a projector, a computer generated presentation on a particular desert survivor, a video camera and tons of energy! You just supply an electrical outlet, the students, their publicity releases, and a projection screen, or we’ll even settle for a bed sheet!
