Your College E-Newsletter
This electronic newsletter is an attempt to enhance communication within the College of Sciences. We plan to include brief announcements, notices, and information of interest to faculty, staff, students, and friends of the College of Sciences and the larger university community.
In order to succeed, this publication will rely upon your submissions, suggestions, comments, and ideas. Please submit brief notices of research and teaching accomplishments, awards and presentations, grants and donations, alumni news, hirings and promotions, publications, guest lecturers, and other events, activities, and news of interest to the College of Sciences family.
Peer Review Publications
The number of peer reviewed publications by faculty continues to increase in quantity and on the pages of high impact journals, external research support is also increasing, as are attempts to secure external peer-evaluated funding and student enrollment figures at the doctoral and undergraduate levels. The College of Sciences represents 6% of undergraduate student majors, however, our students represent 20-30% of the Honors College (over the last few years). Last year, our faculty obtained sabbatical and development leaves in a disproportionately high number as compared to faculty in the other colleges. This result is directly linked to the ability of College of Sciences faculty to demonstrate, in addition to their publications and research activities, consistent external funding, attempts to obtain funding, or pledges that sabbaticals would be used to try and obtain such funding.
This is a good time to collect your published papers for 2005 and send copies to the Dean's Office (Rychelle Tomlin). Also, if you have published any books I would appreciate the loan of a copy for display purposes. Similarly, if any of your articles are featured on the covers of journals, please forward a copy of the cover.
UNLV Department of Geoscience hosts weekend trip to Zion National Park
The department of Geoscience hosted a trip for UNLV students the weekend of Sept. 30-Oct. 2 to Zion National Park. Assistant professors Kim Johnson and Adam Simon led a group of students who explored the amazing geological features of the park, hiked, and camped.
The Seventh Annual Mathematical Competition
The Seventh Annual Mathematical Competition was held Saturday, October 8 2005. The winners of the competition, their standing and majors are: First Place – David Hannasch, Sophomore, Computer Science; Second Place – Nathan Rowe, Freshmen, Mathematics; Third Place – Tae Kim, Freshmen, Biochemistry. Our congratulations to these outstanding UNLV students and to Professor Gennady Bachman for oganizing this event.
The competition is open to all undergraduate students at UNLV and consists of a set of five problems. The first, second, and third-ranked contestants receive prizes of $300, $200, and $100, respectively. These awards were made possible through a generous donation of our alumnus Steven Scroggin, M.S., Mathematical Sciences (2000) and the Department of Mathematical Sciences. The winners of this contest are often selected to represent UNLV in the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition, the premier mathematical competition for undergraduates in North America. This annual contest began in 1938 and is designed to stimulate a healthful rivalry in mathematical studies in the colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. It is administered by the Mathematical Association of America and attracts a large number of contestants from nearly 500 colleges and universities across North America.

Scholarship Dollars at Work
The September 2005 issue of this University Foundation publication includes a feature on John Brinda, a graduate student in biological sciences and recipient of the 2005-2006 Wolzinger Family Research Scholarship. This endowed scholarship supports John's research on the environmental stresses that impact mosses found in the Nevada desert. Working with Professor Lloyd Stark, John and other colleagues have collected the first state records of various moss species.
Leonard Frome Scholarships
The Mathematical Sciences Department is pleased to announce three recipients for the Leonard Frome Scholarships: Guillermo Maldonado, Nathan Rowe, and Patrick Sims. Each student will receive a $ 1,000 award.

Portable Teaching Laboratories
To help alleviate the overcrowding in our teaching labs, the University is planning to lease temporary (portable) labs that will be used until the College of Sciences acquires additional high quality space. Currently, College of Sciences faculty are involved in teaching labs on Saturdays. Without additional temporary space, additional departments would most probably have to start teaching labs on both Saturdays and Sundays.
Mural Contest
The College of Sciences is looking to commission two 7 x 7 foot murals for walls in MPE a, near the Dean’s Office. The subject of the murals must be related to the sciences and be appropriate for all audiences. The winning entry(s) will receive the paint and related materials necessary to complete the project and a $ 100 prize.
All College of Science students, staff, and faculty are eligible. Please submit mural designs to the Dean’s Office, MPE-a, Room 100 (MS 4001), no later than October 24, 2005.
