This electronic newsletter is an attempt to enhance communication within the College of Sciences. We plan to include brief announcements, notices, and information of interest to faculty, staff, students, and friends of the College of Sciences and the larger university community.
In order to succeed, this publication will rely upon your submissions, suggestions, comments, and ideas. Please submit brief notices of research and teaching accomplishments, awards and presentations, grants and donations, alumni news, hirings and promotions, publications, guest lecturers, and other events, activities, and news of interest to the College of Sciences family.
Department of Energy (DOE) Nuclear Energy Research Awards (NERI)
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced twenty-four research awards totalling $12 million over three years to universities to engage students and faculty in advanced nuclear energy research and development programs.The awards allow selected universities to participate directly in efforts to develop advanced nuclear technologies that will enhance our environment and support an economy that is less reliant upon fossil fuels.
UNLV is the lead organization for a $687,288 three year grant titled, "Solution-Based Synthesis of Nitride Fuels," in collaboration with the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Project leaders include: UNLV Associate Professor of Radiochemistry Ken Czerwinski and Thomas Hartmann, Research Scientist and Director for Structure and Solid Phase Analysis (S-SPA), Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies; and Al Sattelberger (visiting faculty member at UNLV) , Gordon Jarvinen, David Clark, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).
New Graduate Student Advisor - Nicholle L. Booker
The College of Sciences is pleased to announce that Nicholle L. Booker has joined the staff as Graduate Affairs Coordinator, effective January 3, 2006. She comes from the University of Nevada, School of Medicine where she coordinated Graduate Medical Education activities and the Community College of Southern Nevada where she is currently employed and teaches Introductory Psychology. Originally from Pennsylvania, her education and employment experience while attending Pennsylvania State University provides the abilities and experience necessary to provide outstanding services for our graduate students. Death Valley Scholarship Established
A former UNLV student, Maureen Wruck, has established a scholarship for graduate students in Geoscience. An annual award of $1,500 will be available to qualified master's or doctoral students in Geoscience, who demonstrate financial need and who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher.
Bhatnagar Family Scholarship
The December issue of Inside UNLVincludes a feature story on the mathematics scholarship established by Associate Dean Satish Bhatnagar and his children Avnish (M.S. Mathematical Sciences, 1989), Archna (B.A., English; M.A., Curriculum and Instruction) and Anubha (B.A., English, M.A., Curriculum and Instruction).
New Centers Approved By the NSHE Board of Regents
Please note that the Center for Atmospheric, Oceanic & Space Sciences (CAOS) was approved at the December 2005 NSHE Board of Regents meeting. CAOS will deal with the following activities:
The center will be housed in CBC B416 and will report to the Deans of Science and Engineering and the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies. For information, please contact Dr. Dieudonne Phanord at 895-0361.

Geoscience Newsletter (Printed)
The Geoscience Department has published the Fall 2005 issue of the Geoscience Newsletter. Faculty members Jean Cline, Ganqing Jiang, and Catherine Snelson led the effort to compile, edit, and distribute this twelve-page newsletter, with reports and photographs on the activities of faculty, students, and alumni. This issue includes remarks from the Chair, Wanda Taylor, and brief essays by professors Gene Smith and Steve Rowland.
