Advanced Studies of Desert Mammals
Stacy Mantooth is pursuing a doctoral degree in biological sciences at UNLV. His research and dissertation focus on the evolution and biogeography of various species of mammals, particularly bats, across North American deserts. He studies where different species of animals are found and why they inhabit those areas. Through the use of genetic analyses, Stacy examines how the distributions of various species change with their changing environments.
Understanding the Desert
The goal of his research is to provide a better understanding of the evolution of desert environments over time while examining the diversity of life across western North America.
Outside the Classroom
In addition to receiving numerous competitive research grants, Stacy is the recipient of a prestigious National Science Foundation research fellowship. He also serves as an ad-hoc journal reviewer for multiple scholarly publications, such as the Journal of Biogeography and the Journal of Mammalogy.
Helping the Next Generation
After completing his doctorate, Stacy plans to continue his career in academe, directing a vigorous research program and helping the next generation of students succeed.
Invaluable Experience
"I've had some great opportunities at UNLV that I wouldn't have had elsewhere. This experience is invaluable as I begin building a career in academia. I'm grateful for the opportunity."

The College of Sciences offers research opportunities, including laboratory experience working side-by-side with professors.
