A Closer Look
Two years ago, when I moved to the U.S., I was anxious and eager to embark on a career in the sciences. Little did I know that within a matter of months, I would be given a chance to experience science up-close and personal, at its brightest best.
A biology major with a desire to pursue a M.D./Ph.D in cell and molecular biology, I am the first UNLV student to receive the prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education award.
New Experiences
I met Dr. Deborah Hoshizaki, an associate professor in the department of biological sciences at UNLV, and she was kind enough to take me under her wing. I took a graduate-level discussion course on cell and molecular biology in my very first semester with Dr. Hoshizaki and started work in her lab. For the first time, I was able to move beyond the typical biology lab of looking at slides and specimens, to experiencing the actual process of scientific thought and experimentation. The experience has been an immensely fulfilling and decisive one; I now have my sights set on a career in biomedical research.
What the Future Holds
My future plans include the intention to complete and carry out detailed analysis of phenotypes while pursuing a department honors degree. My research serves as the foundation of my honors thesis, and I have delivered presentations at local and regional conferences and prepared a poster session at the National Drosophila Meeting in San Diego. Upon graduating in May 2006, I plan to enroll in a Medical Science Training Program (MSTP) and continue to earn a place in the scientific community.

The College of Sciences offers research opportunities, including laboratory experience working side-by-side with professors.
