Big Decisions
Transferring to UNLV was the hardest decision I have ever had to make. I grew up in a small rural town in central Utah where the only diversity was the changing seasons. After high school I attended Southern Utah University for two years and while my time there was well-spent, I yearned for something more, something better. The decision to transfer didn't come easy. I had never lived in an urban setting before, and was afraid that I was going to become just a number, lost in a large university.

Research Driven
The deciding factor to transfer was UNLV's research-intensive curriculum. I was accepted into Dr. Yasbin's research lab where we worked with the bacterium Bacillus subtilis on DNA repair mechanisms and I am now preparing a manuscript of my findings for the Journal of Bacteriology. The fact that undergraduate students get actual research projects with the possibility of publication sets UNLV apart from other large universities.

No More Fears
My fears about attending UNLV were quickly dispelled. Living in an urban setting is not so bad. I am meeting bright, interesting people from all over the world and have a diverse group of friends. The courses I have taken at UNLV have been very student-centered and my instructors are all committed to my success as a student.

In Pursuit of Excellence
UNLV has prepared me very well for my future goals. I plan to go to medical school to pursue an M.D. degree. The faculty and staff have given me professional advice in preparing for medical school and, most importantly, an opportunity to excel. With the education I have received at UNLV, I know that I will be able to compete with medical school applicants from any school in the country. Quality students will seek out and attain a quality education. That is why I came to UNLV, and that is why I will always be proud to be a Rebel.

The College of Sciences offers research opportunities, including laboratory experience working side-by-side with professors.
