The College of Sciences has a number of organizations students can get involved in, whether it be hosting professionals from different scientific fields, or working with the dean to address issues of concern for science students. Read below for more information on the college's student organizations.
Alpha Epsilon Delta — Pre-Health Honor
Society
This organization coordinates such student activities as: the Physician
Shadowing Program; Dentist Shadowing Program; Humanitarian Service Program;
Bone Marrow Donor Registration Drive; Organ Donor Registration Drive; annual
presentations from nationally ranked medical schools (Duke University School
of Medicine, Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine, etc,);
annual presentations from pharmacy programs (Creighton University School
of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, etc.); and the annual tour of the UNLV
School of Dental Medicine.
Association of Pre-Health Professionals
This organization hosts presentations by local health professionals including
but not limited to physicians, occupational therapists, and podiatrists.
They also host annual recruiting visits for the University of Nevada
School of Medicine and Touro University — Nevada College of Osteopathic
Medicine, and annual tours of both medical schools. The organization
possesses an extensive test bank that all members can access.
Biology
Graduate Student Association (BIOS)
BIOS is the association of biology graduate students at UNLV. This organization
was formed in the fall of 2001 to better represent the interests of the
biology department’s graduate students both within the department and campuswide.
Members of our organization sit on many important departmental committees
as well as the university’s graduate student association. Membership in
the organization is voluntary; however most of our current graduate students
count themselves as members. Our four primary goals are:
Chemical Interactions (American Chemical Society Student
Affiliates Chapter)
The American Chemical Society is the world's largest scientific society
dedicated to a single discipline, with more than 158,000 members.
Dental Prospects
This organization hosts professionals in the different fields of dentistry
including but not limited to oral surgeons, endodontists, periodontists,
orthodontists, and pediatric dentists. This organization also hosts an
annual tour of the UNLV School of Dental Medicine. Dental Prospects also
grants access to DAT preparation materials and provides a student support
network for all predental students.
Geological
Society of Nevada, Southern Chapter (GSN)
Membership is open to geologists, geophysicists, geochemists, engineers,
educators, students, prospectors or anyone with an interest in the geological
sciences and/or the goals of the GSN.
Graduate Council
The College of Sciences Graduate Research Council includes two students
from each department, selected by the dean through a competitive interview
process. Representatives from science-based student organizations and
senators from the Consolidated Students of the University of Nevada (CSUN)
are also members. The members work closely with the dean to address issues
of concern to graduate students.
Graduate & Professional
Student Association (GPSA)
The Graduate & Professional Student Association office provides a study
and social lounge for graduate and professional students with a small resource
library and a copy machine. A computer lab is also available to graduate
and professional students during GPSA office hours.
Minority
Science Students Program (MSSP)
MSSP is dedicated to keeping minority students informed of application
procedures, curriculum, and other information regarding admission to professional
schools. Also, we provide opportunities for students to become involved
in community activities, attend guest lectures by community health-care
professionals, interact with faculty, and attend social functions.
mssp@unlv.edu
Nevada Chapter of the American
Statistical Association (ASA)
The objectives of the Nevada chapter are to promote statistics and its
applications and to increase the contributions of statistics to human welfare.
The chapter strives to increase the unity and effectiveness of Nevadans
interested in or concerned with statistical problems.
Pi Mu Epsilon (PME)
The mathematical sciences department has an active math club combining
a Pi
Mu Epsilon chapter and a student chapter of Mathematical
Association of America (MAA) that meets a couple times a month. We
sponsor talks by UNLV faculty as well as mathematicians from other universities,
giving us a way to see how mathematics relates to our everyday lives.
Occasionally, we have social gatherings without sponsored talks as well.
All students and faculty are welcome to come to our meetings.
Sigma Gamma Epsilon (UNLV Geoscience Club)
Article 1, Section 2 of the Constitution of Sigma Gamma Epsilon states
that "the society shall have for its objectives the scholastic and scientific
advancement of its members and the extension of the relations of friendship
and assistance among colleges, universities, and scientific schools with
recognized standing which are devoted to the advancement of the Earth
Sciences." Huh? Said plainly, the goal of SGE is to promote academic
achievement among its members, as well as involvement between members
of this chapter and with other chapters. Keyword: involvement.
While SGE is academically-oriented and GPA dependent, the UNLV Geoscience Club was founded with the goal of involving all students who share a love of earth science, regardless of grade point average.
Society of Physics
Students (SPS)
The SPS encourages
and assists students interested in physics to develop the knowledge, competence,
enthusiasm, and social responsibility that are essential to the advancement
of physics; stimulates interest in advance study and research in physics;
develops collegiality among physics students and faculty members; promotes
public interest in physics; provides a liaison between students and the
member societies of the American Institute of Physics; and recognizes high
scholarship and potential achievement in physics among outstanding students
by means of Sigma Pi Sigma membership.
Undergraduate Council (UC)
The College of Sciences Undergraduate Council includes two students from
each department, selected by the dean through a competitive interview
process. Representatives from science-based student organizations and
senators from the Consolidated Students of the University of Nevada (CSUN)
are also members. The members work closely with the dean to address issues
of concern to undergraduates. In addition, the UC organizes events to
celebrate student accomplishments, meets with incoming students at orientation
times, and holds informal forums throughout the school year.
